The powers of gemstones can sometimes be said to overwhelm even their beauty. Some bring protection, while others are reputed to possess healing powers and are known for balancing the emotions. Some gemstones, however, such as moonstone and aventurine, are said to bring good luck. Indeed, it is possible that the etymology of the aventurine stone is rooted in the Middle English "aventure", or chance encounter. If so, it must have received the name for its luck-bringing characteristics, turning chance to the bearer’s benefit. Tiger eye, as well, possesses lucky qualities and is said to sharpen one's insight. Sardonyx and septarian gemstones are less related to good fortune, but their powers of balancing, healing, and protection mesh well with the capabilities of other gemstones to ward off negative effects.
